Model Governance – it’s more than just permissions.

At the EA Global Summit 2022 Tom O’Reilly spoke on the topic of “Sparx Systems Ecosystem – Trends and Developments in the Post-Covid Era”.

His talk included a description of the latest EA features for model governance… which seemed to mostly be about giving model managers control over who can access different model packages using EA locking and permissions.

But there’s more to governance that just that. It includes…

• Having a consistent meta-model
• Avoiding duplicates
• Ensuring completeness
• Removing empty packages and diagrams
• Finding missing data
• Avoiding redundant work

And at key milestones in the development process:

• Providing reports to support model quality reviews
• Being confident that the model is correct, complete and ready for the next bit of modeling activity.

What about MDGs?

To reduce mistakes, the EA solution is the MDG, which defines tailored toolboxes and quick linkers. These prompt modelers to use the correct element and connector types. But they don’t stop you using the wrong element or connector, and they don’t have any way to apply a modeling standard. Which means a time consuming task of reviewing, trying to find problems and then correcting them is still needed.

Making Governance part of BAU

We believe that every modelers’ time is valuable. We want to make it easy for everyone to find and fix simple issues, easily spot where modeling differs from an agreed meta model (modeling standard) and make poor quality models a thing of the past.
