There is a useful trend to keep more data in Sparx EA models which naturally fit into a diagram. If you created, for example, a data model, then you’d naturally create a diagram which shows how the entities relate to each other.

But in the example above, we have a fairly small list of Business Functions. To understand how each function fits in with the rest of the architecture, you might want to draw a diagram – for each function. You might even get smart, and write a script to create all those diagrams for you, which is hard, and will probably create lots of diagrams which nobody ever views. A diagram which contains all of the functions would be helpful, and the built-in Sparx EA ‘list view’ doesn’t let us make the kinds of edits which a spreadsheet does.

Using a spreadsheet to view and maintain all this data makes your models smaller, stops you needing lots of useless diagrams, and gives you time to create those few diagrams which really give your consumers some new insights.

So now you have the best of all worlds: the best visual modeling tool, and the best editor.
